Writing
is a constant theme in Jennifer Walkers life. Growing up,
she wrote poems and stories for her high school literary magazine,
and she received her B.A. in English from the University of Maryland,
College Park.
After
graduation, motivated by an interest in social issues, she diverted
her path to the nonprofit world, where she did everything from
managing volunteers to coordinating fundraising events, domestic
violence trainings, and cooking and nutrition education classes.
Yet,
at each of her jobs, Jennifer always volunteered to take on writing
projects. As a result, she has been a writer and editor for agency
newsletters and websites and has written development and communications
materials, including grants, brochures, and annual reports. Still
driven to help underserved populations, she continues to write
for nonprofit agencies.
Jennifers
interest in social and community issues also impacts her life
as a freelance writer. She has written articles about an intensive
music education program for Baltimore youth, a nursing program
that helps older adults age at home, murder victims family
members who oppose the death penalty, and a Congolese microfinance
program that uses pigs to help women gain economic security.
She
also writes profiles and stories about health, food, business,
and arts and culture. Her work has appeared in Johns Hopkins
Magazine, Johns Hopkins Nursing, Urbanite, Healthcare
Traveler, CUA Magazine, Culinate.com, and other consumer,
university, trade, and online publications.
Jennifer
is a graduate of the M.A. in nonfiction writing program at The
Johns Hopkins University. She lives in Baltimore with her husband
and their two house plants.
